About The Event
Farm Walk with Brendan Guinan, FiorBhia Farm - Sat Sept 21st 11am - 2pm
Brendan is caretaker and founder of Fior Bhia Farm - an inspiring multi award winner and entrepreneur, working on many fronts of the agroforestry and regenerative farming movement in Ireland, including creating an inspiring educational demonstration and ground-breaking farm model for regenerative farming, agroforestry and organics at FiorBhia. Join us as Brendan shows us around his farm and shares in the insights and knowledge gained over the years!
Brendan farms with nature and without chemical fertilisers, sprays or antibiotics, with the aim of providing minimum processed nutrient-rich and tasty food direct to local families.
Using forested land in collaboration with nature, his animals contribute to the health of the soil and forest, while his farm also acts to capture carbon and increase biodiversity.
Brendan’s animals forage outdoors all year round and he is committed to 100% chemical free farming. This means no chemicals on the land, in the animals' food, or in medication. His aims are shortening the food supply chain ensuring you have access to nutrient-dense meat you can feel good about.
Brendan also works as a farm consultant and specialises in working with and guiding land owners who feel disillusioned with the current standard land management advice and his typical client seeks him out because he practises what he preaches on his own farm. He designs self sustaining and economically viable food systems 100% chemical free that enhance nature using animals, plants and trees to regenerate a diverse soil microbiome.
His farming principals focus on restoring and enhancing soil health by creating more diverse soil microbiological communities. “Regenerative farming practices allow food growers to create an ideal subterranean home for soil microbes that, in turn, deliver nutrients to plants, improve soil function (including fertility and water infiltration) and increase the nutrient density of the food produced. Brendan works with dairy, beef, tillage, pig, poultry, home gardeners and forestry designing bespoke solutions to the many issues chemical farming has created. The common thread with all farms is soil. Conversely, conventional agricultural techniques, which are deeply embedded in the operational farming methods of most agricultural producers today, rely on expensive, degrading and dangerous synthetic inputs that diminish soil health, animal health and human health while reducing the nutrient density of our food.”
Brendan won this year’s RDS Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development Awards which celebrate the work of individuals, farm families and organisations who are enhancing the economic, environmental and social development of Irish agriculture and rural communities.
The RDS Spring Awards recognise the very best farmers, foresters, agri-entrepreneurs and innovators in Ireland, and celebrate and promote the principles of climate-smart agriculture.
Sustainable Rural Innovation Award recognises individuals and organisations who have applied science and technology to help deliver the principles of climate-smart agriculture. Such as greater efficiency, reduced waste and increased profitability.
Brendan is also currently involved in an All Island Awareness Raising Cycle Campaign calling to nine regenerative farms across the country, in order to highlight the incredible work that is being done on the ground by farmers throughout Ireland.
