Off-set your Carbon emissions

CELT (Centre for Environmental Living and Training), Ireland's charity for environmental education and training, in association with the Woodland League (Irish non-profit organisation promoting native woodlands) are now developing a native tree nursery and a local community native woodland in Tuamgraney, County Clare.

Ireland has very little native woodland at the moment, yet, before human activity, it was almost covered with forests of oak, ash, hazel, holly and scots pine, birch, juniper. Current forestry policy is based on commercial plantations of exotic species which are not beneficial to the native wildlife. There is great potential to bring back native woodlands that can be a valuable amenity for community education, recreation, traditional skills and crafts as well as being healthy eco-systems beneficial to clean air, water, stable soil and biodiversity.

We are also looking into opportunities for more community woodlands in counties Clare, Kerry and Leitrim. Possibilities include purchase or lease of sites or use of community-owned sites. Eventually we would hope to encourage community native woodlands in all counties of Ireland - including Northern Ireland. We invite people to offset their carbon emissions by donating an appropriate sum to this initiative whenever they take a flight or drive a long distance. We will set them up an account showing their carbon offsets and they will receive regular updates on the progress of woodlands and tree nurseries with details of access so that they can visit projects and join in voluntary work or training events. Donations should be made by cheque or bank draft (in euros) payable to 'CELT projects'.
